The most uncomfortable red carpet wardrobe malfunctions ever
Many stars employ a whole cadre of people whose sole job it is is to make sure they look immaculate for fancy events. However, once celebrities step out, all bets are off in terms of whether their carefully-conceived looks will cooperate.
Check out which celebs experienced some seriously uncomfortable malfunctions once they hit the red carpet.
Back in 2014, actress Jennifer Garner hit the Hollywood red carpet to promote her movie Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. In a particularly uncomfortable caught-on-camera moment, while sharing a laugh with costar Steve Carrell, Garner caught her dress on her beaded clutch; when she lifted the clutch up, she inadvertently revealed her Spanx.
Awkward, but hey, lucky for her she was wearing something under there.
At the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards, rapper Iggy Azalea turned heads in a revealing dress that had two slits-up-to-there. Unfortunately for Azalea, while adjusting said dress, she flashed a flesh-colored thong, which actually wasn’t covering much at all.
Azalea later posted a NSFW tweet about the incident, claiming that the cameras had just caught a weird angle of her butt. Regardless, as the woman who claimed that she’s got the “best vagina in the world,” she doesn’t seem too broken up about the whole thing.
The Academy Awards are one of Hollywood’s most memorable nights, and in 1998 actress Minnie Driver made that year’s even more so. Driver, who was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in Good Will Hunting, gave the cameras quite an eyeful when the strap of her red Halston gown slipped down in front of a whole group of photographers. Whoops.
According to Hollywood.com, Driver reminisced, “I got up there and I put my hand on my hip and my dress fell off and I… had this fake fur stole around my shoulders and I pulled it around and the picture that they took of me smiling, and with this stole around my shoulders, became quite a famous picture, and nobody knows that it was just my dress had fallen off, and probably if they had got (sic) a few frames before, you totally would have seen my boobs.”
We’d rank this one as one of the most infamous wardrobe malfunctions ever for its duration alone. In 2004, American Pie actress Tara Reid stepped onto the red carpet at Puff Daddy’s 35th birthday party. As the New York Post reports, while posing for the photographers, the strap of Reid’s dress fell down her shoulder, exposing her breast for a full ten seconds. An assistant finally ran up and pulled the strap back up, but not before everyone did some serious rubbernecking.
Reid was understandably devastated by the ensuing coverage, telling US Weekly (via CBS.com), “I was smiling like a fool and people were snapping away. When I realized it, I cried and begged the photographers not to print it, but it was everywhere.… I was on the web sites as having the ugliest boobs in the world.” According to CBS, Reid later underwent plastic surgery in the wake of all the hubbub to correct a previously-botched boob job.
Model Chrissy Teigen donned an insanely revealing dress at the 2016 American Music Awards, and she looked pretty gorgeous. All seemed to be going to plan until it became evident that no matter how hard she tried, Teigen couldn’t prevent the dress from revealing waaaay too much as she moved down the red carpet.
As usual, Teigen had a good sense of humor about the whole thing, later posting a “Thank you” to her team on Instagram and an apology to all those who may have been offended by the wardrobe malfunction: “apologies to anyone harmed mentally or physically by my hooha.”
When actress Anne Hathaway stepped to exit her SUV at the premiere for Les Misérables in New York City in 2012, her dress fell open and she accidentally flashed the waiting crowd of photographers (who quickly noticed that she wasn’t wearing any underwear). The revealing images quickly hit the tabloids and circulated on the internet.
The New York Daily News reported that Hathaway was extremely upset by the gaffe, telling a Vanity Fair writer, “It was devastating. They saw everything. I might as well have lifted up my skirt for them.”
Hathaway later elaborated on her feelings to Matt Lauer during an interview for the Today show (via Entertainment Weekly), explaining, “It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it, and do the decent thing, sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants, which takes us back to Les Mis, because that’s what my character is.”
At least she found a way to link it back to the movie. Those are some serious crisis management skills.
Connie Nielsen first made a name for herself as an actress in the movie The Devil’s Advocate. We’re going to go ahead and be the sartorial devil’s advocate for a second and suggest that when attending a press event on a gusty day, one should seriously consider putting on some panties.
In May of 2017, cameras caught a full view of Nielsen’s backside as she signed autographs for fans in New York City while promoting the movie Wonder Woman. Nielsen played it calm and collected, however, seeming to brush it off and continuing posing for the photographers.
Actress Jennifer Aniston experienced a wardrobe malfunction of a different kind in 2016, when photographers snapped her on the red carpet at the screening of her movie Office Christmas Party wearing a black Céline coat with a whole slew of price tags still attached.
Aniston later appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!and explained that the price tag debacle was all just the result of an oversight on her part: “Well, here’s the sad part of that story…. I wore it at least four times, it was very sweetly gifted to me from a commercial that I had just shot. So I wore it home and I didn’t think about it at all, to be honest. And yeah, four wears later and this happened, and it’s not like it’s even a light tag!”
No word on whether Aniston eventually returned said coat.
Actress Halle Berry posed confidently with Aviron Pictures president David Dinerstein and Aviron Capital chairman William Sadleir at the August 2017 premiere of her movie Kidnap (Aviron had produced the film). Unbeknownst to her, however, her flowing white top had come loose and she was giving everyone, colleagues included, a nice long look at her lace bra.
This is so the kind of thing that would happen to us at the company party. Since it’s Halle Berry though, she probably just carried it off like it was NBD and continued to look amazing.
The only male to appear on our list, actor Ben Affeck suffered the most classic of all wardrobe malfunctions at the Suicide Squad premiere after-party in London in August 2016.
As he strolled out of his car and past the photographers, they quickly noticed that the sweaty star had forgotten to zip up his pants (though weirdly, his belt was still fastened). It’s a lot of look, but let’s be real: it can easily happen to the best of us.
At the Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles in September 2016, actress Lake Bell’s outfit malfunctioned in a rather surprising and unexpected way. Bell was wearing a beautiful fringed gown that showed just a hint of skin when she was standing still; however, as soon as she started moving, the beading flew up, revealing her thong underneath.
Regardless, Bell looked great, and unlike Connie Nielson and Iggy Azalea, she maintained some modesty by not going commando.
